Break open any dictionary and you’ll find that the term “romance” has many different definitions. Surely, part of this has to do with the long history of the word (its first known origins dating back to the 14th century), but another explanation for the numerous definitions of the term “romance” is that everybody seems to have a different idea of what it means.
I’ve been happily married for many years now, and throughout my marriage, I’ve learned to understand (and am still learning—even after more than 40 years) what my wife sees as “romantic” versus what she doesn’t. For example, she’s more likely to find me helping her out around the house romantic than an act of me giving her flowers.
What’s Your Idea of Romance?
In order to have a successful romantic relationship with your partner, it’s important not only for you to understand what he or she considers to be romantic, but to define your own sense of romance as well. After all, we don’t live in an age of arranged marriages; we have the freedom to choose who we’re with. So what aspects of your partner drew you in? What do you find romantic about them?
If you chose your partner because he or she is good-looking or makes a lot of money, you should understand that your idea of romance may not be fulfilled “’til death do you part,” because good looks and money can always be lost. Hopefully, then, your idea of romance goes beyond the surface and you’re attracted to your partner not because he or she is financially rich, but rich in integrity and character. That’s something that can keep your marriage strong for your entire lives.
